Compare / MarketMuse review
MarketMuse review: a serious planner with a price behind a demo.
This MarketMuse review comes from a competitor. We make SerpDad, which also helps teams decide what to write, so we are not neutral. We stuck to what MarketMuse publishes on its own home and pricing pages, checked 21 Oct 2026, and we name the places where it does things we do not.

The short version. What MarketMuse is.
MarketMuse is a content planning tool. Its home page says its AI tells you what content to write, and how much. It builds an inventory of the content you already have, scores how hard each topic is for your site, and turns that into a plan of pages to create or update.
It is unusually clear about what it is not. The home page says it does not write content for its customers, though its Optimize tool has a generative component to speed up drafting.
In short: MarketMuse is a research and planning desk for content strategists, sold through a sales conversation.
Who wrote this
The team behind SerpDad. Both tools try to answer what a site should publish next, so this is the closest overlap we have with any vendor. We used only MarketMuse's public pages and gave no star ratings.

Who it suits. MarketMuse fits these teams best.
- Content strategists at publishers and brands with a large archive to sort.
- Teams that buy software through a demo, a quote and a contract.
- Editors who want difficulty judged against their own site, not a generic score.
- Teams that want several brief formats and written strategy documents each month.
Features. What you get, as MarketMuse describes it.
From the MarketMuse home and pricing pages, checked 21 Oct 2026.
Content inventory
An inventory of your existing pages with data to decide what to keep, update or add. The home page is clear that it is not a CMS.
Content planning
A personalized roadmap of what to create or update, built with what it calls patented topic modeling.
Personalized difficulty
Shows which topics are easier or harder for you, based on the authority your site already has.
Content briefs
Recommendations on structure, expertise and depth. Strategy plans list nine brief types; the others list article briefs.
Optimize
Quality analysis and link recommendations for a draft, with a generative component to help write faster.
Competitive analysis
Finds gaps where competitor content is weak, to point your plan at them.
Pricing. MarketMuse pricing, checked 21 Oct 2026.
From marketmuse.com/pricing. No plan shows a price. Every plan button, the free one included, says Book a demo.
| Plan | Price | Users | Tracked topics | Queries a month | Briefs a month | Strategy documents |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | 1 | None | 10 | None | None |
| Optimize | Not published | 1 | 100 | 100 | 5 (article briefs) | 1 a month |
| Research | Not published | 3 | 1,000 | Unlimited | 10 (article briefs) | 3 a month |
| Strategy | Not published | 5 | 10,000 | Unlimited | 20 (all 9 types) | 5 a month |
The site also carries a Start my free trial link, but the pricing page does not state a trial length, a card requirement, a contract length or a billing cycle. Ask for all four on the demo call.
Strengths. Where MarketMuse is genuinely good.
It starts from what you have
Every paid plan includes a site inventory, so the plan reflects what you already cover. That is the right place to start, and few tools do it.
Difficulty for your site
A difficulty score based on your own content is more useful than a generic number. SerpDad gives verdicts per keyword, not a personal difficulty score.
Honest about writing
It says it does not write content for customers. In a market full of one-click articles, we respect that.
Weaknesses. Where MarketMuse falls short, in our view.
You cannot price it alone
No plan shows a price. You need a call to learn what it costs, which makes a quick budget case hard.
Brief allowances are small
Optimize includes 5 briefs a month and Strategy 20. A site that needs 50 new pages will wait, or pay for more.
One site per plan
Each paid plan lists an inventory of 1 site. Agencies with many clients should ask how extra sites are priced.
The evidence is a model
Recommendations come from its topic model. We could not find whether it reads the live top 10 for each keyword, or a list of source URLs behind each call.
We could not find AI answer tracking on its home or pricing page. If that matters to you, ask on the call.
How it compares. MarketMuse next to the usual alternatives.
| Tool | How it decides what to write | Entry price | Next to MarketMuse |
|---|---|---|---|
| MarketMuse | A topic model plus an inventory of your site | Free plan, paid plans by demo | The tool reviewed here |
| Clearscope | Query discovery from a topic or URL, then grading | $129 a month | Public price, less planning |
| Frase | Research, topic clusters and an audit of your pages | $39 a month billed yearly | Also writes and can publish |
| Keyword Insights | Groups keywords that share top 10 results | $58 a month (credits) | Groups keywords, does not inventory your pages |
| SerpDad (our tool) | The live top 10 for every keyword, checked against the pages you own | $15 a month, plus your own provider fees | Same planning job, public price, a receipt for every decision |

Our MarketMuse review verdict. Is MarketMuse worth it?
Yes, if you have a big archive and a buying process. MarketMuse looks at your site before it plans, judges difficulty for you rather than for everyone, and does not pretend to be a writer. For a publisher with a strategist and a budget line, it is a sound choice.
Less so, if you need a price today or a reason for every page. If you have to defend the page list with evidence, or keep your plan in step with what Google shows this week, look for a tool that reads the live results for each keyword and shows the URLs behind each call. That is what SerpDad does, for a price on the page.
We are a competitor, so ask MarketMuse for its own numbers. If anything here is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] and we will correct it and change the date.
