Integrations / Linear

SerpDad + Linear: an issue in your team's queue when a run needs a person.

The SerpDad Linear integration is one workflow block, Create task. When a run reaches it, SerpDad opens an issue in the Linear team you chose, with a due date and a link back to the run. Your team works from Linear as usual. The decisions that spend money stay in SerpDad.

No cost. Create task spends nothing on your provider keys.

What flows where. How the Linear integration works.

Out of SerpDad: one issue

A title of up to 200 characters, a due date from 0 to 90 days out, and a description. The title can carry variables such as the project or a count.

What the description holds

A line naming the workflow, the run and the project, up to 25 page, brief or article names, and a link to the run. Not your drafts, not your keys.

Into Linear: one team

The issue lands in the team you named when you added the connection. SerpDad keeps the issue link in the step receipt.

Anywhere after a list

Put the block after any step that hands on pages, briefs or articles. It passes the data on, so the workflow keeps going.

A refused issue is visible

If Linear refuses the call, the step fails with Linear's reason, for example a wrong team. Fix it and retry the step.

One team per connection

Need issues in two teams? Add two connections and pick the right one in each block.

Why a task, not a message. Some work needs an owner and a date.

A Slack message is gone by lunch. A Linear issue sits in a cycle with a name on it. Use Create task for work a person has to finish: refresh six decaying posts, check a client report before it goes out, review the pages a re-plan moved.

The issue says what to look at and links to the run. The work itself happens in SerpDad: the review queue, the brief, the sign-off. When the person is done there, they close the issue in Linear.

For a quick heads-up instead, use Notify by Slack. Many workflows use both.

What you need. A Linear key and a team ID.

  • A Linear API key, created in your Linear account settings. Treat it like a password.
  • The ID of the Linear team the issues should go to.
  • The Owner, Admin or Manager role in SerpDad to add connections and publish workflows.

Setup. Connect Linear in three steps.

  1. Create an API key in Linear

Name it SerpDad so you can find it later, and copy the ID of the team you want.

  2. Add it in Workspace, Connections

Choose Linear, paste the key and the team ID. SerpDad stores the key encrypted and shows it masked from then on.

  3. Add Create task to a workflow

Pick the Linear connection, write the title, set a due date if you want one, and publish the workflow version.

Triggers, blocks, approvals and every output: Jobs and workflows docs.

What it won't do. It never reads your Linear, and an issue never approves a run.

SerpDad sends one request to create an issue. It does not list issues, read comments or change anything else in your workspace.

Closing the issue changes nothing in SerpDad. Every spending step still shows its estimate and waits for an approval in SerpDad, or runs inside a standing approval an Owner or Admin granted, up to a per-run ceiling.

To cut the connection, remove it in Workspace, Connections and revoke the key in Linear.

Read the four refusals

Templates. Workflows that are better with a Linear issue.

Publisher: find decaying posts

An issue per run that lists the posts losing clicks, for the editor who owns refreshes.

Monthly re-run

An issue to review what the re-plan changed, due the week the run lands.

Agency monthly client report

An issue to check each client report before your agency sends it.

What does SerpDad create in Linear?

One issue in the Linear team you chose when you added the connection. It has a title, an optional due date, and a description that lists what reached the step: a count, up to 25 page, brief or article names, and a link to the run in SerpDad.

What do I need to connect Linear?

A Linear API key you create in your Linear settings, and the ID of the team the issues should go to. You paste both in Workspace, Connections. SerpDad stores the key encrypted and shows it masked from then on.

Does creating Linear issues cost anything?

No. Create task spends nothing on your provider keys. It is part of the plan.

Can a Linear issue approve a run?

No. Closing or moving the issue changes nothing in SerpDad. Approvals happen in SerpDad, where the approver reads the estimate first.

What happens if Linear refuses the issue?

The step fails with Linear's own reason, for example a wrong team. Fix the connection and retry the step from the run. The rest of the run waits for you.

The issue in Linear. The decision in SerpDad.
